Building the Kerrville Base Station Tower

We chose to use Maverick Internet as the main hub for TexxaStar for several reasons. Among the most important is the elevation the site offers, putting us within easy sight range of several key locations.

These photos represent work that spanned about three weeks in Spring 2004. The weather was much wetter in the Hill Country this year, which has added months to the original project timeline.

Maverick Internet, Spring 2004

Every tower starts with a big hole

Big, deep, hard-to-dig hole, it was

Must have a good ground connection

Scientific installation of ground rod

Fill with concrete, haul off debris

Just a few steps from the front door!

Tower before assembly - and it's raining

Different day, and it's coming together

Second section installed and bolted together

The top of the second section is about 18 feet

Yep, that's near about 18 feet

One section added, and Randall thinks it's done

Randall threatens tower with a hammer

Just a few more feet to the top - HELP!

Elroy engineering the structural brace

Hmmm, this is pretty comfortable!

Time to add the remaining sections

Getting in position to grapple the tower

Elroy fitting three more sections to the first two

The sections are adjusted with a hammer

Bolting the top and bottom sections together

The crane still has control of the tower

Checking the next section attachment

Checking section attachment higher up

It's finally up! Time to come down

It's much faster going up....

Only 20 more feet to go - almost home

Another day, another task to complete

Elroy mounts the parabolic antenna

Now it must be aimed at the big tower

Elroy mounts the omnidirectional antenna

TexxaStar is ready for testing!

We can now see Center Point

Adding more antennae
